A very successful restaurant owner once told me that "People Eat With Their Eyes." He was making a point the the foods served should look beautiful or scrumptious, the restrooms should be sparkling clean, the servers dressed well and smiling
Well, let's not stop at that; the food should also smell delicious. If the plate looked beautiful and smelled like a skunk, your appetite would be turned off, even if your eyes were closed
. Now that is how powerful our smell is. .This is why it is important to have a great smelling establishment along with restrooms that smell clean and fresh. Once a person takes a whiff, they are immediately turned on or off by the aroma.
This is because smell molecules rush from your nose receptors and straight to your olfactory bulb, which is connected to the emotional center of your brain. This emotional reaction center of your brain also affects your memory of that experience. Very powerful indeed.
Once triggered, there is a reaction of pleasure, or dislike that is unfiltered. If a person associates a scent with a positive experience, example ( a turkey in the oven at Thanksgiving) they retain a good feeling about that situation.
This is why a food establishment should have a good scent at the entryway when people first enter the establishment. I have personally experienced, musty and unpleasant odors when entering a restaurant. Not a good way to entice your customers.
It is also very important to have a clean and fresh smelling restrooms, so no one is turned off and appetites are not ruined. Remember: A restroom is most likely the first room or last room that a customer goes to in an eating establishment.
Make it a good experience in and out because people eat with their eyes and nose before they take the first bite!
